Direct Primary Care vs. Traditional Primary Care

Direct primary care (DPC) and traditional primary care can cover many of the same everyday health needs, but the way you access and pay for treatment is different. With direct primary care, you generally pay a recurring membership fee directly to the practice rather than billing insurance for routine visits. At Big Life Integrative Health + Regenerative Aesthetics, that membership includes longer visits, same- or next-day availability, telehealth options, in-house lab draws, and direct access to practitioners.

Located in Lone Tree, CO, Big Life offers primary care through a membership-based model that gives you more time with your provider. Our team includes Devon Nelson, FNP, IFMCP, a board-certified family nurse practitioner and certified practitioner with the Institute for Functional Medicine.

How Does Direct Primary Care Work?

Instead of paying for each routine office visit through an insurance plan, you pay a monthly membership fee.

At Big Life, that membership covers a broad range of primary care needs, including annual physicals, sick visits, wellness visits, medication checks, nutrition reviews, skin checks, diabetes management, and several in-office tests and treatments. Some specialty services, labs, tests, and prescriptions carry additional costs.

This model can also simplify communication. Big Life DPC members have 24-hour access to the provider team, including on weekends and holidays, plus telehealth options for added convenience.

How Is Traditional Primary Care Different?

Traditional primary care commonly bills an insurance company for covered medical services. Your costs depend on factors like your deductible, copay, coinsurance, network, and individual benefits.

Direct primary care removes insurance billing from routine visits at Big Life. That doesn’t mean health insurance becomes unnecessary, though. Big Life recommends maintaining a catastrophic insurance plan for life-threatening emergencies, hospitalizations, and visits to specialty practitioners.

Which Model Fits Your Needs?

The choice often comes down to what you value in your everyday medical treatment. DPC may appeal to you when you want predictable membership pricing, more direct communication, longer appointments, and easier access to the same medical team. Traditional care can make more sense when staying within an insurance network is your priority, or you prefer to use your plan for routine office visits.
